About House District 53
Growth is one of the primary issues the residents and communities in our district are grappling with. House District 53 includes Chaparral, the largest unincorporated community in New Mexico, which is located on the Texas border north of El Paso. It officially has around 16,000 residents but local officials believe the population is closer to 26,000 and will top Alamogordo’s within 10 years.
About 15 people move to Chaparral every week. Its infrastructure needs include roads, gas and sewer lines, parks, and a public safety facility for law enforcement, firefighters, animal control, and ambulance services. Funding these projects is critical to building a community where residents can enjoy their freedoms.
This district also includes the east edge of Las Cruces – the area where the city plans the majority of its future growth. Las Cruces’ newest public safety facility is located here. The city is building the East Mesa Recreation Center here. The state is building the Center for Reproductive Health here.
Neighborhoods, commercial centers and arterial roads will be built in the coming years. We must fund the infrastructure that will create livable neighborhoods.
In between these population centers – also in House District 53 – are the Organ Mountains and parts of White Sands Missile Range and Fort Bliss. A love for our outdoors and the jobs the military bases bring to the area can be among the uniting forces for our people here.
